How to avoid the damage of optical radiation to exhibits in museum lighting design?

A museum is an institution for the collection, protection, research, display, and promotion of various cultural relics, historical relics and artworks. The design must fully consider the proper protection of these precious historical and cultural properties, and it is necessary to avoid damage to the exhibits as much as possible. Such as lighting, radiation, temperature, humidity, and active gas pollution in the atmosphere, etc., may cause damage to the displayed items. In the led lighting design, in addition to ensuring the proper illuminance of the exhibits, the following aspects should also be paid attention to:

1. The spectral characteristics of radiant energy.
Shortwave components should be minimized in lighting led design. As the wavelength of the incident light shifts to blue or even into the ultraviolet band, the degree of damage to the exhibits by the led light increases. Because ultraviolet light is very destructive to substances. Therefore, a led light source with less ultraviolet radiation should be used in museum lighting.

2. The intensity of the radiant energy (illuminance) illuminating the exhibits and the length of time the exhibits are illuminated.
That is to say, the illumination and exposure time should be limited in the led lighting design, and the damage to the exhibits caused by the rise in temperature should be reduced. Limiting illuminance and exposure time are complementary. The damage degree of 100lx illuminance acting on the exhibits for 1000h is equivalent to the 50lx illuminance acting on the exhibits for 2000h.

Led lamps light is incident on the exhibits, and part of it is absorbed by the exhibits, causing the temperature of the exhibits to rise and make them dry. If the indoor air humidity is insufficient, the exhibits will be damaged. In addition, the temperature of the exhibits repeatedly rises and cools due to the on and off of the lighting led products, and thermal expansion and contraction can also damage the exhibits. The heat effect comes from the infrared part, so it is necessary to filter out the infrared light in the light source as much as possible.


3. The size of the absorption and radiation resistance of the exhibit materials.
The nature of different exhibits should be considered in led lighting design. Items with different properties of materials have different sensitivity to light. According to the exhibits with different sensitivity, consider the light led source and different led lighting illuminance used.

The illuminance led of exhibits that are not sensitive to light damage can be higher; the illuminance of exhibits that are sensitive to light must be limited, generally not exceeding 200lx; and the exhibits that are particularly sensitive to light should be illuminated at low illumination, generally below 50lx, and closed The works should be kept in dark conditions during the exhibition.

Finally, a suitable light source led should be selected in the led lighting design of the museum, and ultraviolet radiation and infrared radiation should be filtered out as much as possible. Choose the appropriate illuminance level for different exhibits.
