Packaging LED News: Lumileds Rubix, Bridgelux F90 and Luminus IR

Luminus Devices has added products designed for coupling optical fibers to its infrared (IR) LED product portfolio, aiming to compete with VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) components.
 
Lumileds announced that its Luxeon Rubix series of 1414 color LEDs have added new lime and amber components, increasing the spectral possibilities of multi-channel entertainment and architectural or facade lighting, while also producing an improved white light spectral power distribution (SPD).
 
Bridgelux announced the launch of the F90 series of white light LEDs, which use a phosphor formula originally developed by GE to achieve better color rendering in solid-state lighting (SSL) products without reducing light efficiency.
 
 
Rubix components
Lumileds launched the 1.4×1.4-mm series to the market in August last year, mainly for entertainment applications and automotive and even industrial applications. Initial products include monochromatic red, green, blue and royal blue LEDs and phosphor-converted white LEDs. The new features will increase the potential colors generated by the multi-channel SSL system and achieve high-quality white that is only a mixture of color components.
 
The addition of Lime and PC Amber creates opportunities to improve CRI, brightness and efficacy,when Lime is used instead of white, objects usually appear more vivid [compared to red, green, blue, and white, red, green, blue, and lime 4 channel system]. However, Lumileds refers to lime LEDs as Lime. The reason it calls the amber LED PC amber is because in some of its LED families, it offers both monochrome and phosphor conversion options.
 
Red line phosphor
Bridgelux introduced the company's F90 LED announcement in the "Company News" section of the website, but after further review, the announcement is worthy of further discussion. Obviously, there is now another source of LEDs equipped with potassium fluorosilicate (PFS) red phosphor. This phosphor was originally developed by the GE Lighting organization, when it was part of GE; when the organization was sold to the United States In the case of an industrial partner (AIP), the intellectual property (IP) was transferred to GE Current. Bridgelux announced that the company is Current Lighting Solutions LLC, which is obviously the legal name of the company.
 
For many years, only GE Current used this technology in general lighting products under the TriGain brand, and Nichia manufactured these LEDs for GE Current. Last fall, the two companies reached an agreement to allow other SSL manufacturers to purchase PFS-based LEDs from Nichia, and Bridgelux will now also be the source of this technology.

Luminus infrared LED
Outside the scope of human vision, Luminus said that its new CBM-90-IRD LED will cost less than VCSEL components, is safer in front of the human eye, and can easily integrate the system into the led light engine. Typical applications are industrial and machine vision systems.
 
The new series can provide 15W of radiant power, and the LEDs are available in 780, 850 and 940 nanometer versions. The CBM-90-IRD-780nm LED products provides 10+W of radiant power, which can be effectively coupled into the 5-7mm fiber bundle used for endoscopes and infrared light engines. With the growing demand for light sources that can stimulate the development of new biomarkers, this product line is a perfect substitute for traditional laser light sources.
